The Major Arcanas of the Tarot correspondence with Astrological Signs, as well as elements and planets
One of the most accepted ways of assigning astrological significations to tarot cards is the kabalistic way of Sefer Yezira. This is no surprise as kabala seems to be intertwined with astrology and tarot through & through.
When following this method, we first become aware of the connection between hebrew alphabet, numerology and the Major Arcana Tarot Cards: Each major arcana card is assigned a number and letter. These numbers and letters all carry
their very own meanings and symbolise energies which are descriptive of the major arcana archetype.
In addition to the number and letter, which are unique to each and every major arcana card, we also have an astrological signification.
Due to the nature of the groups of the letters in the hebrew language, it is easy to accept that indeed god almightly created the entire world simply by uttering the letters. 3 Mother letters, as there are 3 major elements.
7 Double letters (which are written similarly, but pronounced differntly), which are perfectly suitable with the 7 planets of traditional astrology. In astrology, we often say a certain planet rules over a certain zodiac sign, in night or day.
The 12 plain or ordinary letters, are almost melted into the 12 zodiac signs, or astrological signs.
This creates an intricate relationship between the cards, when we know what are their true astrological significations and what they signify for each other in a reading of major arcana cards.
Speaking of numerlogy, if we do the math we'll see that there are only 12 signs, while we have 22 major arcanas.
This is where sefer yezira (Book of Creation) comes into play -
by it's opening we are introduced to how god went about creating the world with the 22 hebrew letters energies, the book classifies the letters as such:
Three prinicipal letters for the elements, Seven double letters for the planets and Twelve ordinary letters for the signs.
Mother letters and the elements
The 3 principal (sometime refered to as "mother") letters: א,מ,ש they are connected to the elements of fire, water and air accordingly and are given to the cards: Judgment, The Hangedman & The Fool
Double letters and the traditional planets
7 double (consonants, which may sound differntly according to pronounciation) letters: ב,ג,ד,כ,פ,ר,ת
The doubles, are assigned to the (traditional astrology, meaning excluding pluto, uranus and neptune) planets in the same order: Saturn, Sun, Mars, Jupiter, Venus, Moon, Mercury
Then they are assigned their cards: Saturn tarot card is The World, Sun gets The sun card, Mars is The Tower, Jupiter is The Wheel of Fortune, Venus is The Empress, Moon is the High Preistess and Mercury is The Magician
It is also worth noting that in a similar way of associations - we can also say that each of these special arcanas are in a way also related to astrological signs as each of the planets (except the lights: Sun & Moon)
are considered rulers of astrological signs. Each planet, has diurnal rulership of active, often referred to as Yang, energy. The nocturnal rulers are passive, Yin energy.
According to this division: Saturn rules Aquarius in the day (diurnal ruler) and Capricorn in the night (nocturnal ruler). This means we can go as far as saying that some of the active features of the card the world are
from the sign of aquarius which revolves around community, sharing and progress. In the passive features we have responsibility, grit and ability to fulfill plans.
Similarly: Jupiter rules Saggitarius in the day and Pisces in the night.
Venus rules Libra in the day, Taurus in the night. Mercury rules Gemini in the day, Virgo in the night. Sun rules Leo and the Moon rules Cancer.
The ordinary letters and the astrological signs
Finally, we have 12 "ordinary" letters: ה,ו,ז,ח,ט,י,ל,מ,נ,ס,ע,צ,ק
They are assigned the astrological signs.
