Tarot Card Meaning: The Chariot

What does The Chariot mean in a tarot card reading?

The Chariot in a Tarot Card Reading

The Chariot represents the astrological sign of Cancer, a sign focusing on introspection for the sake of progress. It is a card that shows a great vessel, vehicle, in which a person is able to use in order to be faster. The chariot is a prize in the hands of those who can wield it.

In the card symbolism we can see the two sphinxes, representing the pillars of the solomonic temple at the feet of the chariot. The black and white pillars signify both paths we have to act, the external and internal, the inwards and outwards. The chariot can only run if these pillars are in some sync, meaning there is an equal attention to outward as well as inwards.

This is progress from the earlier cards up to this point in the Major Arcana series, as we’ve seen a lot of introspection, inward attention so far. When the chariot comes up in a tarot card reading it invites us to collect our skills, improve our focus and take inventory of all we have. The chariot can only be wielded with a cool head and a clear goal, so we must align ourselves with that energy, if we want to progress in our mission.

Usually this card is great to see, as it reminds us of divine providence and the miracles we can see working when we get on the path, do the work and simply focus on the important path in life. Not getting distracted by too many options. If each of the sphinxes took the chariot in his own direction, it would remain in place, or even break.
